ok so seriously I suck at this wiki thing and don't like it.
I'm Shannon, drama student, 2nd year, counter bitch @ jb hifi, food and xbox enthusiast, cat lady.

Emperor Jones is really hard to read with all the accents written into it. Makes it super hard to understand and I have to read each line at least 3 times before I can make sense of it. Maybe I'm just stupid. I have a few ideas for my set design. But I don't want to give anything away too early. I don't like my ideas too much at this stage either. Here's something cool I found.

Emperor Jones Set Design by Hannah Clark

Wish I was that creative. Or as creative as the others in my class. They know their shit.

Ok so basically the main reason I am writing this now is because I'm packing for Koh Samui and I leave on thursday and I wont be here next week to hand in my essay. So I'm going to put a (VERY ROUGH) draft here now and when I get back I'll be submitting another on the monday of week 8 SERGE YOU SAID THAT WAS OKAY I HAVE WITNESSES!

NO ONE LAUGH AT MY I AM NOT AN ARTY PERSON AND I HAVE LITTLE TO NO IDEA WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT
I'm way too tired to be defending any terrible writing. Goodnight world. See you when I'm back with a wicked tan suckerzzzz xoxo
You need to put up more of your dramaturgical work...mood board?

ok ok, I know I suck at keeping up with this. Heres a little mood board. Will explain more about this and add more to it in a little while.

OK, this bad boy of an online space needs to be re-awakened somehow!
Let's start with my reading of the emperor jones..

So basically, the main themes and ideas I identified in The Emperor Jones was firstly power and corruption (this is really what my set has been based around) and how in Jones' mind, since he can't seem to find a 'home' or sense of belonging in being black or white, he finds it in power. Or rather, tries to find it. In my interpretation, Jones tries so hard to make this power his own that it literally kills him. So that's just a very basic run down of how I see it. Obviously will explain far more in the presentation.

So speaking of plays about power and corruption, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar explorers rather similar issues. Here is an example of set design for this:
I love this levels in this, I think it would make very effectives visuals and the actors could have so much fun exploring the possibilities of it. I think it would be very expensive though.

Here is a very early, very rough drawing of what I first imagined my set to look like:

Please excuse my horrible drawing skills.
And here is a quick plan of some additions and changes I made the following week:

This idea came to me when watching the dancers in week 1. The way their shadows made one complete dancer was mesmerising. Building on this, I also drew inspiration from another set example, in which people lined the back of the stage, staying perfectly still. I've adapted these ideas to fit my main theme of fear, power and corruption. These little white silhouettes will be lining the front of the stage so that when the lights hit them they cast a dark black shadow. They also help to convey time passing throughout the play, as they get larger. Mainly, they are 'the fear'. By the end of the play, the shadows consume Jones.

As I started making these designs physically, it began to change.. see below:

(Sorry I don't know how to rotate this... lol)The curtains changed from being at the back to being in the middle of the stage, so they can be used by the actors to create new shapes and explore the sets potential further. The throne was given a set of stairs to create the illusion of power for Jones.

(also do not know how to rotate this one either...) I though about chains to play on the fact that he was once a slave but dismissed it because I figured it would be too much for one stage and it could get in the way for the actors.

ADDING MORE LATER :)

It's monday of week 14 and I feel as though I should definitely be putting more on here about how my set came to be the way it is..

In my presentation tomorrow I will be explaining what everything in my set means and how it serves the text, so I don't want to give it away here.

The truth is, I never once had any kind of plan of how my set was going to look like. I did have a few ideas in mind, but mainly it was the shuffling of these and narrowing it down to what I was capable of making in the little stage model and what works in the theatre. That is not an unusual process...the sub-conscious is working always...I lot of my designs have simple arrived! A lot of these ideas came to me completely out of the blue while in class working. Suppose I was inspired by others' work? I don't feel like this had been a bad thing. I am actually really happy with my set. Every time I have come up with something in class and stuck at it, working it out and how to relates to the script, changing small aspects (again because of what I am capable of making on the stage model) it has all worked out brilliantly. I have heard feedback from others about my set and it's great to see that others can identify the themes in the text without even reading it or knowing what production it is just by seeing the stage model; and that makes me feel like I've done a good job this semester in this unit. Even though it is my first design unit and I've never done anything like it in my life.
So well done...you haver to learn to trust your work...lots of talent here...C+
